Christmas Candles
The lighting of candles around the edge of the balcony for the first Mass of Christmas seems to be successful so we will be repeating it this year.  So if you would like to have a candle lit for someone in your family please fill in the form in the Narthex and place in the box.

Beaver Scouts
I am delighted to welcome a Beaver scout group in our parish hall on a Thursday starting 1st December at  5.30 pm.  The group was started last year by parents of children at St Bede’s.  They have asked to use the parish hall and I was very happy to accept their request since their presence in the church hall is another step in the parish’s attempt to develop our links with young people in the parish.  Beaver scouts are for children from the age of five and a half to eight years, so any more children would be very welcome.

Web site
I am pleased to say that the parish web site has been updated.  I am very grateful to Michael Henderson and Matthew Curtis for all the work they have done on this.  The significant change is that there is a blog that enables the website to be easily updated.  The parish newsletter will be posted on the site each week.  For those of you who deal with the internet please look at the site and let me know if you have any comments.

Christmas Celebration Concert
Compere for the evening Alfie Joey  (BBC Radio Newcastle).  An evening of Christmas entertainment, in aid of Save the Children, led by the Inspiration Choir.  Plus other local celebrities  at St Mary’s Cathedral, Newcastle on Tuesday 13th December at 7.30 pm. Tickets £10 available from Pauline Books & Media (at Cathedral) 0191 2316040. Cheques payable to ‘Save the Children’

Church Open for Prayer and Reflection
I have been considering having the church open more often for people to use for prayer and reflection.   I appreciate that there are security issues.  As an experiment for the Friday’s in Advent, starting on 2nd December the church will be open from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm.  I hope this will give people an opportunity, especially for parents and grandparents taking children to school to use the church when passing by.  The church should have people in it from 8.30 am until about mid-day.  I am looking for volunteers to be present in the church from 12 noon until 1.00 pm to ensure the church’s security.  Please sign the list in the Narthex if you can help.  Ideally I’d like at least two people to be present.

St Bede’s School

The school has recently had an OFSTED  monitoring visit, its overall assessment is that the school is making “good progress”.  It is quite rare for schools in special measures to be given such a positive assessment.  Sincere congratulations and respect to all the staff at the school for their high level of dedication and commitment.  The parish and parents are delighted that such great progress is being made.  The school is still in special measures but there is a real sense that the school is making great strides in its development.
