Harvest Sunday
The prayer and worship  group have decided that next weekend will be deemed Harvest Sunday.  This coincides with making our donations for CAFODs Family Fast Day.  We would also invite people to make donations of food for the Matthew Project.  Please leave in the Narthex and they will be presented by our young people at the 10.00 am Mass next Sunday.

CAFOD family Fast
This Friday, 3rd October is CAFOD’s harvest family fast at a time when we give thanks for food harvested we seek to help those who still go hungry.  Please collect your family fast envelopes from the Narthex and return next weekend.  This will be part, as mentioned above,  of Harvest Sunday.
 
Refugee/Asylum Seekers
There will be a collection next weekend for tins of food (not pork) for refugee and asylum seekers.  Please leave in Narthex. 
 
Journey of Faith Programme
The Journey of Faith Programme continues Wednesday at 6.30 pm in the Presbytery.   The programme is open to anyone wishing to become a Catholic and Catholics who wish to know more about their faith. This week we will be exploring images of God
 
Baptisms
The next session of the baptismal programme will begin next Thursday at 6.45 pm.  Please notify me as soon as possible if you have not already done so if you would like to participate in the next session.
 
October -  a month for Our Lady
October is one of the months’ we seek to have a devotion to our Blessed Lady.  The rosary will be said before all weekday Masses apart from Friday and on Sunday’s one of the hymns will be devoted to Our Lady. 
 
Youth Mission
Our young people are continuing to prepare for the mission.  Some of them had a meeting with the senior management team of the High School last week.  The next meeting in preparation will be on Thursday 16th October at 7.0- pm at St Aidan’s First School.  We continue to say the youth prayer at the end of Mass.  Copies of the prayer are in the Narthex.  
 
The Source 1st October
The next gathering for young people at the Cathedral will be on Wednesday 1st October 7.00 to 8.30 pm.  This is open to anyone from Year 9.

Confirmations 2015
Bishop’s House has given me a date for confirmations next year which will be on Friday, 5th June 2015 at 7.00 pm.  This will be presided by Bishop Seamus.  The diocese has published a new set of guidelines for confirmation and thankfully they do not change current practice in the parish which is to offer the sacrament to pupils from Years 9 and 10 in High School.  I will be contacting, through the school, all young people in that age range in the parish inviting them to be confirmed next year.
 
Day of Recollection
 
The autumn day of recollection will next  Saturday leaving at 9.15 am returning at 5.00 pm.  The theme of the day will be Creation and Spirituality.  This day is the feast day of St Francis and we will share in the liturgical celebrations of the community at 12 noon.  Please sign the sheet in the Narthex if you would like to take part in this day. 
 
Parish Fayre
The parish council has decided we will hold a parish fayre which will take place on Saturday 22nd November, 1.00 to 4.00 pm.  Donations for tombola and raffles will be appreciated.  Further details later.
 
Gift Aid
If you gift aid your donations to the parish there is a letter for you from the diocese in the Narthex.  I would like to add my own personal thanks for your  generosity to the parish . If you did not get your letter last week please take it today.
 
Training Day on Catholic Social Teaching
The diocesan Justice & Peace coordinating council are having a training day based on the key themes of Catholic social teaching on Saturday 11th October from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. This will take place here at St Bede’s church hall and I will be leading the day.  If any parishioners would like to take place they would be very welcome to do so. Please bring a packed lunch.
 
Anniversary of National Board of Catholic Women
TA Mass to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the national board of Catholic women will take place on Thursday 16th October at 7.00 pm at St Hilda’s Diocesan Resource Centre, West Road, Newcastle, followed by light refreshments.  Please see poster in Narthex.

Catholic Charismatic Weekend Conference at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy, Hebburn, NE31 2ET Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October.  Further details and information on poster in Narthex.

Home Mission Sunday
This weekend we are reminded of our call to proclaim the Gospel in our own country.  The call to evangelisation is a shared responsibility through the Church.   The Church is seeking to develop new ways to reach out to those who have drifted away from our communities. Please take a prayer card from the Narthex. 
 
Annual Mission Appeal by the VMM
This weekend we will have our annual missionary appeal which this year will be for the Volunteer Mission Movement to make a missions appeal. There will be a second collection. Scotland and the United Kingdom
Now that the majority of the people of Scotland have voted to remain as part of the United Kingdom let us keep Scotland and the whole of country in our prayers that we will be truly united working together to promote the common good of all. May there be a true sense of peace unity in Scotland and throughout our nation

As I mentioned ion my sermon last week I took part in a very successful  “mission control” event at the Youth Village with twenty young people from St Benet’s High School.
