ADVENT

Happy New Year  -  with this the first Sunday of Advent the Church’s year starts anew.  Advent is a time of hope.  We are reminded that we are called to be a people of joyful expectation while we acknowledge the fulfilment of God’s presence among us.

Advent Churches Together Carol Service

Today at 4.00 pm we have the ecumenical Advent carol service which will be hosted here.  I would encourage as many of you as possible to come to this service.  In the past this has been supported well by other churches.  It would also be good to support those who are contributing to the service especially our young people.  I would like to pass on my thanks to all those who have helped and contributed to the service.

Advent Reconciliation

Bishop Seamus has asked that as happened in Lent confession is offered at a regular time throughout the diocese so for the Wednesday’s in Advent there will be confessions :

   Saturdays        5.45  -  6.15 pm
   Wednesdays  6.00 to 7.00 pm.
   St Aidan’s 7.00 to 8.-00 pm

St Bede’s Advent service of reconciliation will be Sunday 22nd December at 4.00 pm.

Youth Sunday

I would like to thank those young people who prepared and shared their reflections for Youth Sunday.  Their comments were much appreciated.

Fr Jim Lennon

As many of you will already know Fr Jim Lennon who was a much loved and valued parish priest at St Wilfrid’s in Blyth for 18 years sadly passed away two weeks ago. His memorial Mass will be on Tuesday 10th December at 12 noon at Wilfrid’s, Blyth.

Parish Ceilidh

This will take place on Saturday 7th December at 7.30 pm  Tickets are £5. I am pleased to say ticket sales are going reasonably well, but tickets are still available from members of the social committee in the Narthex after Mass. Since this is the only social gathering we have as a parish around the Advent and Christmas period I would encourage as many of you as possible to take part. The ceilidh group have given us a very generous discount since they like playing for us.

The next meeting of the council will be on Monday 9th December at 7.00 pm.  Please contact me or a member of the council if you have any item you wish to have discussed.

Survey on Family Life

Yesterday was the deadline for sending off your surveys for the Synod on Family Life.  My thanks to all who have expressed an interested and have at least attempted to try and fill in the form.  I have to admit that even I found it difficult to fill in the form so I imagine it wasn’t easy to do but I am grateful for those who had a go.  It has been very important for people to be able to share their opinions.  Let’s pray that the Synod will be guided by the Spirit in its discussions on the family.

Christ the King  -  Youth Sunday
Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King  This Sunday is also deemed Youth Sunday where we are asked to pray for the young people in our parish.  Some of our young people will be addressing us after the homily at both Masses. In the past year it has been marvellous to see young people making such a positive  contribution to the life of the parish.  I would like to commend them for this and thank them for their example.   There will be a retiring collection taken on behalf of the Youth Ministry Trust (YMT) to support the work of Catholic Youth  -  Envelopes are available in the Narthex for your donation. If you wish to gift aid your donation please sign and date the declaration on the envelope.

Today we welcome Sofia Middlemiss into God’s family in baptism.  We pray for Sofia, her family, and all preparing for baptism.

This will be taking place next Sunday 1st December at 4.00 pm here at St Bede’s.  There is going to be a rehearsal for all taking part on Wednesday 27th November at 6.00 pm.

Extraordinary Synod on Family Life
As I’ve mentioned in previous bulletins recently  there is going to be an  extraordinary synod on family life.  Preparations have already begun for this.  The Bishop is collating information for the Synod.
The Bishops of England and Wales have put out a questionnaire for people to express their views about family life.  You can fill this  questionnaire online on the following website:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FamilySynod2014
or there are hard copies available in the Narthex. I think it is wonderful that everyone in the church is being given the opportunity to express their views on family life which is something that effects us all.  It would be a great pity if this opportunity for people to express their views was only taken up by a small number  of people.  Therefore, I would strongly encourage people to fill in this questionnaire so that the views  and experiences of good people like yourself can be expressed and listened to.   Responses have been requested to be filled in and returned by the end of this week., 30th November. A simplified version of the questions is available in the Narthex

St Bede’s First School  will join us for Mass on Thursday at 10.00 am to celebrate the conclusion of the “Year of Faith”.

Parish Ceilidh
The social committee are now selling tickets for the December parish ceilidh.  It will take place on Saturday 7th December at 7.30 pm  Tickets are £5. Since the last ceilidh was cancelled due to lack of interest I know that the social committee is keen for this one to be a great success.  Since this is the only social gathering we have as a parish around the Advent and Christmas period I would encourage as many of you as possible to take part.  The ceilidh group have given us a very generous discount since they like playing for us.

Refugee/Asylum Seekers
There will be a collection next weekend for tins of food (not pork) for refugee and asylum seekers.  Please leave in Narthex.
