Holy Week

This weekend we begin the most important week in our liturgical year.  In faith we accompany Christ from his triumphant entry into Jerusalem into Jerusalem, the signs of love in the washing of feet, and the gift of the eucharist, the agony in the garden, to the darkness at Golgotha with Christ on the Cross, the emptiness of Holy Saturday, to the women approaching an empty tomb on the dawn of the first Easter.  The liturgies, especially Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter vigil, are a wonderful way to transport us to be present with Christ during these most sacred moments.  I do hope that in lives that I know that are very busy with many responsibilities you will be able to take part in the services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter vigil.

At the Easter vigil we will receive five adults into the church, two children and a baptism of their sister.  So please keep Scott Legge, Brian and Carol Gregory and all the members of the Jones family as they prepare to be received into the Church.  Let us pray for our community that we will all be brought closer to the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection and share in the love, wonder, grace and mercy, brought about by the events of the first Holy Week.

Palm Sunday 29th March:  (with blessing and distribution of palms).  Saturday vigil Mass at 6.30 pm, Sunday morning at 10.00 am.

Service of Reconciliation  29th March:  Confession at 4.00 pm. This sacrament will also be available Tuesday 31st March and Wednesday 1st April from 9.20 to 9.50 am.

Maundy Thursday 2nd April:  Mass of the Last Supper at 7.30 pm with watching at Altar of Repose until 10.00 pm.

Good Friday 3rd April:  Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3.00 pm.

Holy Saturday 4th April:  Easter vigil for the Lord’s Resurrection at 8.00 pm.  We will be receiving five adults and three children into the Church, with the sacrament of confirmation being given to the adults

We continue to pray for Fr Jones.  It is hoped that he will be able to come home and be looked after there.  As mentioned last week Fr Lee Barrett will be the new Parish Priest at St Paul’s, Cramlington. Monsignor Philip Carroll has been asked by the Bishop to celebrate the weekend’s liturgies at St Robert’s, Morpeth for the time being.

School Holidays
I would like to wish all the staff and pupils of our schools a blessed and restful holiday

The Holy Year for Mercy
I thought you would be interested to know that Pope Francis has announced that from the feast of Christ the King and throughout 2016 will be a Holy Year for Mercy.  This reminds us of how mercy is at the heart of Francis’ papacy which we can truly reflect on during Holy Week.

Confirmations

We take a break for Easter with the next session on 23rd April.

St Bede’s School

The pupils from St Bede’s will be joining us on Wednesday at 10.00 am as their Holy Week Mass.  I am sure it will be as moving and memorable an occasion as was the Advent and Christmas liturgies.  I would encourage parishioners to attend.

The Deanery

It has been announced that Fr Lee Barrett will take up the role of Parish Priest of St Paul’s in Cramlington the weekend after Easter.  Fr Barrett has also been asked to help other parishes in the deanery.  I am sure that this will mean that Fr Lee will be assisting other priests as we help to cover St Robert’s in Morpeth while Fr Jones is poorly. Last weekend Fr Jones announced to the parish that he does have cancer and is exploring with his doctors possible treatments.  We continue to keep Fr Lawrence and the parish in our prayers.

SVP  National raffle tickets are on sale this weekend.

General Election

The Bishops of England and Wales have written a letter to all Catholics identifying key themes for us to reflect on as we decide for whom we wish to vote for on 7th May. We discussed this document at the Christ in the World group.  As one member said “its pussy footing but it’s good”.
