Good Shepherd Sunday
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday where we are asked to pray for vocations, primarily for the priesthood and religious life but throughout the church. At the Sunday morning Mass the primary school will have a major part of the Mass leading with the readings, offertory and the hymns. It is a reminder to us that our schools are very much a part of our parish community. At this Mass Mr Groark will give a brief introduction of himself to the parish.
Journey of Faith
As was the case last year we shall have a small number of meetings with those who were received into the church for them to reflect on their experience of being a member of our parish community. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 5th May at 6.30 pm.
Christ in the World
The next meeting of the group will be Friday 1st May. We will look at the film The Way which explores the theme of pilgrimage, with particular reference to the pilgrimage Santiago Compestella.
Pastoral Care for the Sick and Elderly
In the light of the above paragraph I am aware that more lay people will be needed in visiting the sick and housebound in the parish. If there are special ministers who have time to take communion to the sick and housebound please let me know.
Extra Responsibilities
In recent days I have become aware that I am having to take on extra responsibilities although I hope at least some of these will be temporary. On Saturday, with encouragement from Bishop Seamus, I accepted the nomination to the Chair of the Justice and Peace co-ordinating council. Since there were no other nominations I now have this role. With Pope Francis’ concern for weak and vulnerable in our world I sense there is a great opportunity to promote peace and justice issues in the diocese. Due to Father Lawrence’s tragic illness I am also being asked to take on extra responsibilities in the parish and in St Robert’s Primary School. Also, it seems highly likely that from the summer there will be a vacancy in the role of Catholic chaplain for HMP Northumberland (formerly Acklington and Castington), this will mean that this will mean while waiting for the new chaplain to be appointed I will need to resume some undertakings in the prison. .
Annual Diocesan Mass for Justice and Peace
In the light of the above you will not be surprised that I want to highlight the annual Mass for Justice & Peace on the 2nd May at 10.00 am at St Mary’s Cathedral. The Mass will be presided by Bishop Seamus and you’ll recognise the preacher.
Refugee/Asylum Seekers
There will be a collection this weekend for tins of food (not pork) for refugee and asylum seekers. Please leave in Narthex. Next collection first Sunday of the month.
General Election
Please keep the election in our prayers. Let us pray that whoever is elected will seek to build a society in accordance with the values of the Gospel. A member of Churches Together has established an on-line hustings for you to ask questions on line to candidates, copies of the questions will be in the Narthex. If you wish to ask a question email: bedlington.election 2015@gmail.com. Candidates questions can be found on: www.trinitychurchbedlington@org.uk
Prison and the Churches
On 29th April and 6th May there will be two talks on the prison system and a reflection on what response should be of churches. They will be at Bedlington Christian Fellowship from 7.00 to 9.00 pm. One of the two speakers is Canon David Peel and the other you will recognise if you go!
Lecture on “….. Wonder
Prof Frank Cottrell-Boyce, film writer and writer of the Olympics Opening Ceremony will be giving a lecture on Tuesday, 28 April, at 6.00 pm at Ushaw College. I think this will be really interesting and encourage people to go.
Diocesan Festival
The third diocesan festival will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June at Emmaus Youth Village Consett.
