Feast of Ss Peter and Paul

On this great feast of Ss Peter and Paul we remember the two great saints of the early church.  Peter the leader of the church founded by Christ and Paul the great herald to all peoples of the Good News. Today’s feast also reminds us how the grace of Christ transformed these two men who were not strangers to human weakness.

A second collection will be taken today for Ss Peter and Paul.  Please use your white envelopes.

Amendment to Eucharistic Prayers

The Vatican Congregation for the Sacred Liturgy with approval of Pope Francis have decreed that St Joseph be acknowledged in all the Eucharistic Prayers.  So after reference to Our Lady the phrase “with blessed Joseph, her spouse” will be said.  The Vatican decree made reference to St Joseph as a model of kindness and humility which is why they think he should be referred to in all the Eucharistic Prayers.

First Holy Communion Programme

We have the final First Holy Communion liturgy this Sunday.  Having celebrated First Holy Communions on 16th June this weekend we will be have “Sending forth” liturgy which reminds the children that receiving their First Holy Communion is not the end of the journey but the beginning of their call of discipleship to follow Christ and proclaim the Good News in actions and words.  Discussion have already started for planning for First Holy Communions for 2014.  There will be a meeting before the end of term for parents of children in Year 2 who would like their children to receive First Holy Communion next year.

Baptism

· We congratulate Lucy  Heatley who was baptised into God’s family in baptism last Sunday.

·        Today we welcome Daisy May Turner into God’s family in baptism.  We are asked to pray         for Daisy, her parents, and all preparing for baptism.

Parish Ceilidh

The next parish ceilidh will be on Saturday 13th July starting at 7.30 pm. Tickets £5 available from members of the social committee.

Parish Youth Forum

As I mentioned recently one of the decisions of the parish council in the light of the very full and helpful discussion with some of parishioners who have been recently confirmed, it was decided that a youth forum would be established in the parish for young people to decide for themselves
what they would like to be happening within the life of the parish.  The forum will have its first meeting next week on 7th July at 11.30 am.  I have had an enquiry as to whether primary school children are to be involved in this and the answer is a very clear yes.  All young people of school age will be very welcome.

Catechists in the Parish
On Sunday 14th July after morning Mass, there will be an meeting of anyone who would like to help with the baptismal or the first holy communion programmes. It is important that more parishioners are involved with these important areas of parish life. If  you  like to find out about more please come to the meeting or contact myself or Alison Johnston

Student takeover of the Presbytery!
Last Sunday I had a ‘phone call from Fr Paul Wilkinson, a friend of mine, who is also the chaplain to Sussex University.  Next week he is touring with ten of his students, mainly overseas students, around the north of England visiting various places of pilgrimage.  He asked if he and the students could stay on 3rd and 4th July this week.  I said they’d be very welcome there is plenty of floor space in the Presbytery for students to put down a roll mat and a sleeping bag.  It would be nice if we could provide some food for them when they arrive on the Wednesday and after they return from their day trip on the Thursday.  Any offers of food would be appreciated.

Refugee/Asylum Seekers
There will be a collection next weekend for tins of food (not pork) for refugee and asylum seekers.  Please leave in Narthex. Next collection first Sunday of the month.

Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes
As you may know Lourdes has been affected by severe flooding in recent days.  The floods have left their mark on the grotto and the town but the diocesan coordinator for the pilgrimage Fr Peter Stott has assured us that the diocesan pilgrimage will be going ahead as planned.  We pray for the people of Lourdes and for all pilgrims going this summer.

Retirement in the Sacristy
Rory O’Callaghan has informed me that he will have to give up his duties in the sacristy due to ill health.  I would like to express my sincere thanks to Rory for his generous help in the sacristy over the past three and a half years. It has been much appreciated.  If anyone would like to volunteer  to help in the sacristy, please let me know

First Holy Communions

I have had a lot of positive feedback about the First Holy Communion celebration.  My thanks to all who contributed to such a lovely day. We continue to pray for our new young children who have just received their First Holy Communion.

Restructuring of Parishes in the Deanery

Just a note primarily for those who did not see a bulletin last week, the parish meeting on 9th June made it clear that the primary focus of the parish needs to be ensuring that as many people as possible are contributing to the life and activities within the parish.  I would encourage you to look at the back of church that lists the various activities to see if there is something you would like to be involved.

St Bede’s Football Club

Last week I went to the AGM of the North East football league.  It was a fascinating meeting, it was very obvious that the organisers behind the football league see this as a platform to proclaiming our faith in Jesus Christ to young men in the region.  I had not appreciated that running a football league is actually a football league  of 26 clubs with two divisions is a big undertaking and required an awful lot of organising.  I left with a tremendous respect for all those involved in this football league.  It requires a great deal of effort and commitment which is motivated by their love and commitment to Jesus Christ.  All in all very impressive.  I am delighted that St Bede’s football club has survived its first season and that our manager, Dominic Molloy, is already preparing for next season. I am delighted that the club has provided a number of young men in the area with something to fill in their
time. We hope to strengthen the links between the football club and the parish in the coming season.  If you or know of anyone who may be interested in joining the club please contact Dominic Molloy on 07725039180.

CAFOD Syrian Appeal
The national Cafod office have been in touch to say that the Catholic communities in England and Wales have raised £1,483,139  for its emergency appeal for the ongoing crisis in Syria. The Disaster Emergency Committees (DEC) which collects  money on behalf all humanitarian charities during emergencies has contributed a further £239,000
Cafod. I am happy to collect and forward any further  funds given for this important appeal. We continue to keep the ongoing crisis in our prayers

Fr Chris is looking for guinea pigs!

As mentioned last week I am giving a paper at a conference in July and would like to have a dry run beforehand.  I am interested with the overlaps between faith and culture with a particular reference to the possible common ground between the tradition of Christian faith and the folk music tradition. I will be doing this on the afternoon of 30th June.  Drinks and nibbles available from 5.15 pm with the seminar starting at 6.00 pm and should be finished by 7.15 pm.  If you are interested please let me know.
