L E N T
Lent starts this Wednesday, 22nd February.  The Church sees this time as a special one of grace to enable us to come closer to God as we prepare to celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection.  I guess for most of us our initial response when Lent is approaching is to ask “What shall I do for Lent?”  This is a valid question but there is also the question “What does God want for me for Lent?” and the answer to that question is to know his love  and for us to respond in a similar way.  In reflecting on what you could do for Lent please consider those activities that would enable you to know God more deeply.  During Lent the following will take place:
· Masses on Ash Wednesday at 10.00 am and 7.00 pm.  Ashes will be blessed.  KS2 children from St Bede’s school will join us.
· The church will be open on Friday mornings during Lent.
· Penitential Service, Sunday 1st April, 4.00 pm.
· Lenten liturgy and soup, Thursdays from 12.30 pm at Trinity Church, Bedlington.
Journey of Faith
Tuesday evening at 7.00 pm, will be looking at the sacrament of reconciliation and sacrament of the sick.
Christ in the World Group
· 9th March A discussion on the role of women in the church.
· 13th April An exploration about bio-ethics eg stem cell research/cloning
· 4th May   Pastoral and social issues concerning dementia
We also we will be having Professor Ayers from Durham University who has agreed to come to the parish to speak about the life and work of Blessed Cardinal Newman.
CAFOD
Family Fast Day is Friday 2nd March, envelopes will be available  from next Sunday.  Two parishioners Jackie and Tino Manai who have just opened Tino’s Deli on Bedlington Front street have kindly offered to run a coffee morning from the cafe from 11.00 am to 12 noon on Friday 2nd March.  All proceeds raised during that time will be given to CAFOD.

Parish Council minutes of the last meeting are on the notice board in the Narthex.
Open House
There will be a special meeting of Open House on Friday 9th March, 6.00 to 7.00 pm.  Ian Lavery MP  will be present to celebrate six month anniversary of the project.  This will give him an opportunity to meet those who come to Open House and the volunteers.  There will also be a shared table buffet.  Mr Lavery has agreed to take part in a question and answer session which will last for about thirty minutes.  This event is open to the whole parish to give people an opportunity to experience the project and also to take part in the discussion with Mr Lavery.
Sick and Housebound
It is important that our sick and housebound feel they are part of the Church and are able to receive the sacraments, especially during Lent.  If you are aware of any sick and housebound among your family and friends who are not seeing a priest regularly could you please let me know.
