Parish Council
The main issue we discussed at the parish council was having a parish mission in the December of this year which will be exploring all the vocations that we have;  this will be part of my silver jubilee celebrations.  We will have a Mass and celebration to celebrate the anniversary of the Church at the end of October and this will be a launch pad for preparing as a parish for the mission in December.  I will give you more information in the weeks ahead.   Also discussed was the issue of heating in the hall and church which we will look at.  Also in the light of the parish losing my salary from the prison we looked at ways of fund raising.  There will be minutes of the meeting hopefully by next weekend.

Christ in the World Group
At the meeting on Friday we agreed on the following programme for the next three months.

· 9th March A discussion on the role on women in the church.
· 13th April An exploration about bio-ethics eg stem cell research, IVF
· 4th May   Pastoral and social issues concerning dementia

We also we will be having Professor Ayers from Durham University who has agreed to come to the parish to speak about the life and work of Blessed Cardinal Newman.

CAFOD
There is some great news from CAFOD, they have been told that any money donated for the whole of Lent and some of Easter will be matched by the government.  I will be saying more during Lent encouraging you to take advantage of this significant source of funding for

Journey of Faith
Tuesday evening at 7.00 pm, will be looking at prayer and spirituality in the Christian tradition.

St Benet’s High School

As many of you will know St Benet’s High school heard the tragic news that one of it’s former pupils who left the school last year took his life on 3rd February.  His name was James Fraser.  Please keep this family, friends, and the whole community of St Benet’s High School in your prayers at this very difficult time. I took part in a memorial service for James on Tuesday morning.  It was very moving to see so many of his friends and pupils of the school expressing their grief and support to one another. This is not an easy time for the school and I commend Mr Todd and the other members of staff for the thoughtful and caring way in which they are dealing with this painful and difficult situation.

Weeks of Guided Prayer

The opening session for the week’s of guided prayer will take place on Thursday 16th February at 7.00 pm.  I am aware that a number of people who will be taking apart cannot be present on that evening.  For those people your prayer guide will be writing to you to give you the time and venue (which room in the hall, church, or presbytery) you will be meeting your prayer guide where you will meet your prayer guide for the first time on February 23rd..  Between the Churches Together there will be 34 people taking part.

Lent the following will take place:

· Evening Mass on Wednesdays at 6.00n pm

· Stations of the Cross on  Wednesday mornings at 10.00 am

· The church will be open on Friday mornings during Lent.

· Penitential Service, Sunday 1st April, 4.00 pm.

Evangelisation and Lent
Members of the diocesan evangelisation team met with members from the parishes of the local deanery last Friday.  An idea for Lent was that we would be invited to wear a purple ribbon as a symbol of Lent.  This we hope will provoke people to ask why we are wearing a purple ribbon and will give us an opportunity to explain the significance of Lent as a Catholic Christian. I have decided that after people have received Ashes they will also have the opportunity to receive a purple ribbon for them to wear throughout Lent.  Moira Quinn has kindly agreed to lead in the making of these ribbons for the parish and for the schools.  If you would like to help in the ribbon making this will take place after Mass in the hall on 15th February.
