Welcome Back Sunday
Our annual Welcome Back Sunday will take  place next weekend on Pentecost Sunday.   It is an opportunity for us to reach out to those on the fringes of the church and gently invite them to return.  How welcoming are we as a community?

Pentecost Service
This will be taking place next Sunday. This will be an ecumenical service led by our young people, the format of the service will be similar to the service we had at Advent with a combination of readings, music, drama and symbols to celebrate Pentecost.  This event can be seen as a part of Welcome Back Sunday so please feel free to invite people who you think might be interested to this event as well. There will be a rehearsal for all taking part in the service on Wednesday 4th June at 7.00 pm. The final rehearsal for the joint choir will take place on at Trinity Church on 3rd June, 7.15 to 8.00 pm.

Parish Council
There will be a parish council meeting on Monday 9th June at 7.00 pm. If there any items you wish to be discussed please contact me or any member of the parish council.

CAFOD
One of the great strengths of this parish is its awareness of local needs and a willingness to meet them in such projects as the Open House and the Matthew project.  Last week I spent some time with regional CAFOD volunteers and learnt more about CAFODs work.  One of its aims is to improve its links with parishes.  I still want our parish to be committed to meet local needs and help with local projects but on reflection I would like to see CAFOD having a higher profile in the life of the parish.  I am looking for a volunteer who would be a CAFOD representative for the parish and would work to increase its profile in the parish.  Please see me if you are interested in taking up this role.

Bedlingtonshire Chamber of Trade
This organisation is ending as a functioning body.  It is therefore distributing their assets  among various local charities.  They have kindly agreed to give us a donation of £500.  Our thanks to its chair Mr Jenkinson and all its members for their kind donation.

New Chaplain for our Schools
I am pleased to inform you that the Governors of  St Bede’s and St Benet’s have appointed Miss Helen Hunt as chaplain from September. All those involved in the selection process were highly impressed with Helen and we are looking forward to her working in our schools

There will be a collection this weekend for tins of food (not pork) for refugee and asylum seekers.  Please leave in Narthex. Next collection first Sunday of the month

Baptism
The next set of baptismal classes will be starting on 19th June.  Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to take part  in this session.

Feast of St Bede
This weekend we celebrate our patron feast day and in doing so we celebrate our parish community.  St Bede is the only Englishman to be made a Doctor of the Church an honour that has only been given to thirty one people in the whole history of the church.  We give thanks for a man of great holiness and great intellect who engaged deeply with his faith and with the world around him.  The images that we have in today’s Gospel of ‘Salt of the Earth and Light of the World’ are truly apt for this great man. As we pray and give thanks for our parish community this weekend our prayer is as a parish community we can imitate St Bede in being the salt of the earth and a true light of Christ of the world.

Transport for Schools
As you may know the County Council are considering not paying for transport for pupils to attend schools in the county.  This will have a  huge impact on St Benet‘s High School.  Some families who wish their children to attend St Benet’s may not be able to afford this which will be a great pity.  There is a sheet informing you as to how you can take part in the consultation about school transport.  If you would like to be involved please take the sheet marked School Transport which will be in the Narthex.
