Feast Days this week
This weekend we get a rare opportunity to celebrate the birth of St John the Baptist.  Once you appreciate that the only two people whose birthday’s we celebrate in the calendar are Our Blessed Lord and Our Lady then you will appreciate the significance of this feast day.

Later this week we also celebrate two other great ‘giants’ of the early Church with the Holyday Ss Peter and Paul.  Mass times on Friday for this Holyday of Obligation will be 10.00 am and 6.30 pm.  The school will be joining us for the morning Mass.  These two great saints enable us to celebrate the very life and mission of the Church.

Parish Council  Among the issues discussed at the parish council one was the issue of Mass times.  It was proposed that the 11 o’clock Mass on a Sunday morning be moved to 10.00 am from the first Sunday of Advent.  My intention is to have a  ballot over three weekends in July to enable all parishioners to have an opportunity to express their choice on this proposal.
The parish council also looked at exploring the possibility of having permanent deacons in the parish.  I will say something about this at a  later date.  We also discussed the parish mission.
St Bede’s Nursery  Miss Horn inform me that there are still a few places available in the nursery at St Bede’s for  mornings and afternoons.   If you are anyone else you think may be interested in having their child in the nursery for this year could they please contact the school on 822389.
African Art  This weekend we welcome Helena Slater who is the exhibition coordinator for Jungleman African Art.   Helena is a very committed Roman Catholic originally from Zimbabwe who is seeking to promote the work of Zimbabwean artists.  Examples of their work will be available in the hall this weekend for you to look at and purchase if you so wish.
Appeal  Next week we will welcome Glyn Roberts member of the St Barnabas Society who will be making an appeal on its behalf.  The St Barnabas Society seeks to offer support to Anglican clergy and their families when they decide to become Roman Catholics. The Peter’s Pence collection will be deferred until next week

Refugees and Asylum Seekers  There will be a collection next weekend for tins of food and meat (not pork).  Please leave your donations in the Narthex.  Further donations on the first Sunday of the month.
Summer Ceilidh   will be held in St Bede’s Church Hall on Saturday 7th July at 7.30 pm.  Northumberland Fayre will  supply the musical and dance entertainment.  There will  be a raffle and other entertainment. A variety of alcohol is on sale and a shared supper will also be available. Lists will be in the narthex nearer the date for everyone to write down what food they intend to bring along. Tickets available from Val O’Callaghan, Margaret Lacy, Pat Gales, Gwen Carr, Alison Johnston & Lawrie or Bernie Clark.
As this event is likely to be very popular it will be best to purchase/order tickets as soon as possible, cost £5.

First Holy Communion Mass   All the comments I have received from people about the First Holy Communion Mass have been very positive.  As one parishioner said in an email to me “it was a credit to the parish”.  Sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the day, and especially to Mrs Johnston for her hard work in preparing the children for their special day.

Football Club St Bede’s FC  The club manager Dominic Molloy has informed me that training will be taking place at the Westlea pitch on Saturdays at 10.00 am. All players over 16 years will be welcome.

Diocesan Summer Festival  Our First Diocesan Festival will be held at the Youth Village from 29 June -1 July 2012. It will take the theme: “Go out with joy in your heart and make disciples of the whole world” and will make an ideal starting point for the Year of Faith proposed by Pope Benedict.  The Festival starts on Friday 29 June. Arrivals from 5pm and Mass for Feast of Ss Peter and Paul 7pm with the Festival Opening Session at 8pm.

First Holy Communion

This is a special weekend in the parish’s year when we celebrate First Holy Communion for many of our children.  I would like to offer a warm welcome to all family and friends of the children involved.  Please keep the children in our prayers.  My own prayer for them if that they all be truly blessed by meeting Jesus in the Eucharist and that this will be a lifelong source of love, faith and peace throughout their lives.  My thanks to all involved in preparing and celebrating this special day with special thanks to Mrs Johnston for her work with the children.

Your renewed parish priest!

My eight day silent retreat at St Beuno’s, North Wales was a blessed and worthwhile time and really enabled me to re-focus on God and review my priorities.  The spiritual batteries really feel re-charged. Thanks for your prayers and support, the parish was in my thoughts and prayers during the retreat.  After eight days of silence re-adjusting to the real world is a bit of a shock but I am still adapting!  My thanks to Fr’s Bingham, Rattigan and Doherty for supplying in my absence.

Parish Council

There will be a meeting of the council this Monday (18th) at 7.00 pm.  Please let me, or any members of the council, of any item you want discussed.  My apologies for lack of notice.

Sick and Housebound

It is important that our sick and housebound feel they are part of the Church and are able to receive the sacraments, especially during Lent.  If you are aware of any sick and housebound among your family and friends who are not seeing a priest regularly could you please let me know.  I would also be grateful if you could let me know when members of your family are in hospital so that either I, or other hospital chaplains, can visit them. The chaplains will not be aware of someone being in hospital unless they are notified.

Matthew Project

Donations of basic food stuffs for food parcels for local families in need is still sadly needed.  Demand is increasing but supplies at the Coffin Chapel are decreasing so further donations would be appreciated. Just bring them to the church and volunteers will make sure they are taken to the Coffin Chapel.

There will be a  Blood Transfusion  session in the hall on Wednesday afternoon/evening.

Parish Prayer List

On the notice board in the Narthex is a list of people to pray for, this will include all our sick and housebound, those who have died recently, and
those whose anniversaries occur at this time.  The list will be updated on a weekly basis.  I would encourage you to look at this list.  In our bidding prayers each week we will have a simple prayer with extended  silence for those on the parish prayer list.

Parish Summer Ceilidh will be held in St Bede’s Church Hall on Saturday 7th July at 7.30 Northumberland Fayre will again supply the musical and dance entertainment. There will also be a raffle and other entertainment. A variety of alcohol is on sale and a shared supper will also be available.Lists will be in the narthex nearer the date for everyone to write dow n what food they intend to bring along. Tickets available from Val O’Callaghan, Margaret Lacy, Pat Gales, Gwen Carr, Alison Johnston & Lawrie or Bernie Clark. As this event is likely to be very popular it will be best to purchase/order tickets as soon as possible, cost £5.
