Year of Faith

The Year of Faith is being launched at a special Diocesan Mass on 11 October in St Benet’s, Sunderland at 7.00 pm.  This will be a Mass of Celebration and Thanksgiving for our faith during which I shall distribute lapel crosses to representatives from each parish which they will bring back to their own parish for distribution in a simple ceremony.  By wearing a lapel cross we are making a statement of faith.  From earliest times the cross has been a sign of Christian identity and it would mean as a diocese we would be giving common witness to our faith as followers of Christ  -  a gesture worth making.   There is ample parking or the nearest metro station is Stadium of Light.

Refugees & Asylum Seekers

There will be a collection next week for tins of food and meat (not pork).  Please leave your donations in the Narthex.  Further donations on the first Sunday of the month.

RCIA  -  Journey of Faith

The RCIA course meets a number of needs in the Parish.  It is the main instruction of those who wish to become Catholic.  We see those course members being baptised or received into the Church at the Easter Vigil.  It offers the opportunity for those already in the Church to join the course and assist, by prayer, encouragement, sharing and support, those who are to be brought into the Church
The RCIA is also a very good formation course for those who are already Catholic.  It offers opportunities to immerse oneself more deeply in the scriptures, the sacraments, theology and morality.  In it we make connections between the teaching and experience of the Church and our own lives.  Much of this reflection is private but some is shared appropriately within the group.   All is aimed at a better understanding to enable a deeper relationship with God. As we are about to embark on the Year of Faith from 11th October this will be an excellent opportunity to deepen our own understanding and living out our faith.

If you are interested in joining the group in any of the above roles please see Fr Chris or John O’Neill.
We will be meeting on Wednesday evenings from 17th October till Easter 2013
First Holy Communion

The first liturgy for first holy communion will be on Sunday 7th October at 11.00 am.
Day of Recollection  on Sunday 28th October. Further details later.
Preparation for Mission
The preparation day that took place on Saturday 15th September was very worthwhile and I am very grateful to all those who took part and who contributed so generously in preparing for the mission week.  The focus of the week will still be celebrating the vocations of us all and of our shared calling to follow Christ from our baptism.  However, it was decided that instead of looking at different callings we have the mission will focus on the significance of baptism and how we this is lived out in our parish community.  So, the first three nights will explore the different symbols used in baptism:  water, oil, light and the white garment and how they inform our understanding of Christ and our discipleship of Him.  The fourth night will explore the different gifts and ministries in the parish community.  The fifth night will focus on priesthood and the Sunday celebration will involve the young people of the parish and the schools.  The notice board in the Narthex will keep you informed about the mission.

In preparation for the mission I would like invitations sent to all families on the parish roll.  Volunteers will be needed to deliver these so if you could deliver invitations around your local street that would be most appreciated.  Thank to all those who have signed up already. he invitations will be formally given to volunteers at the Mass to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the church.

Liturgy Rota

In the light of the change of Mass time starting from 2nd December there is a need for a temporary rota for the months of October and November. A copy of this is available in the Narthex. If you are involved with the liturgy as a reader, special minister, offertory procession please take a copy
In order to update future rotas there is a sheet on the notice board in the Narthex for you to indicate at which Mass you wish to participate.  Please enter your name and contact number.
