Lent

Lent begins next week on Ash Wednesday.  Masses will be 10.00 am and 7.00 pm.  The Primary School will be joining us for the 10.00 am Mass.

One way of seeing our spiritual life is to view it as a response to God’s invitation to share in his friendship.  Therefore, Lent can be seen as creating the space and opportunity to deepen our friendship with God. In carrying out the traditional Lenten practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving try to regard them within the context of renewing and deepening that friendship with God.

During Lent the following activities will be taking place in the parish:

· Wednesday morning 10.00 am Stations of the Cross

· On Wednesday evening at 7.00 pm there will be Mass.  This will be preceded by:

· Exposition and Reconciliation (throughout the deanery) each Wednesday 6.00 to 7.00 pm

· Service of Reconciliation, Sunday 17th March at 4.00 pm

Rite of Election for First Holy Communion candidates  will take place today at 10.00 am.  Please keep the candidates in your prayers.

Journey in Faith  continues on Thursday at  6.00 pm.

Poverty Action Week
My thanks to all who contributed and participated in the Poverty Action event last week.  About 60 people were present, many from Bedlingtonshire Churches Together.  Our MP said he enjoyed the event and was pleased to have been invited.  The event brought home to me that there are people in the area who are struggling in this current time of economic difficulty. As a community we need to be vigilant to the needs of others and respond as best we can.

Federation of governors:
As of 1st February St Bede’s Primary School and St Benet Biscop’s High School became a federation, which means there is one governing body for both schools.  Could you please pray for the governors of the new federation as they undertake this important responsibility on behalf of the staff and pupils of these two schools.

Churches Together
There will be an afternoon of recollection held at Stakeford Methodist Church on Saturday 16th February.  The day will begin at 2.00 pm will a time of quiet reflection  ‘Reflecting on the calling of Jesus’.
After a break for a cup of tea at 4.30 pm  the Rev Richard Ferguson will recite by memory the whole of St Marks Gospel.  I am told it is a very powerful presentation and worth listening to. You are free to come either or both of the quiet reflection time and the presentation of St  Mark’s gospel..

Marriage (same sex couples) Bill
The bishop’s conference of England and Wales have provided cards for people to send to their MP to express their concern concerning this piece of legislation.  The cards are in the Narthex.

Student Cross Appeal
This will be an appeal with a difference.  They do not want your money but they want your legs on the road for Holy Week!  Next week we will have at least one member of the Pilgrimage  making an appeal   Even if you don’t feel called to walk with a big wooden cross during Holy Week it is an opportunity to reflect on what you want from this Lent.

Teas/coffees after Sunday Mass
We need volunteers who are willing to be on a rota to serve tea and coffee after the Sunday morning Mass.  If you would like to help please sign the list in the Narthex with your name and contact number

CAFOD Family Fast Day envelopes are available in the Narthex for the collection on 22nd February.
