Holy Week Services
This is first opportunity in a bulletin after the Holy Week celebrations to than all those who contributed in some way during Holy Week for offering your time and skills. All the feedback I have had has been very positive. I am delighted that people found Holy Week and especially the Triduum liturgies to be prayerful and helpful celebrations of the central mysteries of our faith. I hope you had a joyful Easter despite the delay of spring!
A Warm Welcome to Fr Tony Rattigan who is supplying for me this week-end
CAFOD Syrian Refugees Appeal
CAFOD have opened an emergency appeal for the situation in Syria which is getting worse by the day. The number of refugees who are escaping the country and in need of help are increasing. There will be a retiring collection that will be left open for the next two weeks.
Restructuring of Deanery Date for your diary
It would be important to have an open meeting of the parish to explore what the restructuring of the deanery will mean for St Bede’s. This will take place on Sunday 9th June after 10.00 am Mass. I would also like to discuss how lay people will need to be more involved when there is not a full time priest in the parish
Confirmations
We have eleven candidates for Confirmation on Friday May 3rd at 7.00pm. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare for this sacrament. We are going on a day of recollection at Jarrow Hall and St Paul’s Jarrow on April 20th. I hope as many of you of as possible will be able to be present for the Confirmation Mass. Bishop Seamus will be present. The candidates have been excellent during the preparations and have contributed a lot to the parish in the process. I hope parishioners give as much support and encouragement as possible, please keep all the candidates in your prayer
School Return
As staff and pupils return back to school this week for the summer term we wish them a fruitful and blessed term, especially those who have important exams or tests
Matthew Project
Now that many of the government reforms to welfare have come into operation it is predicted that the demands on food banks such as the Matthew Project will be even greater. Therefore any contributions of basic food stuffs would be most appreciated. Thanks to all those who contribute and help the Matthew Project
Planned Giving Boxes
If you haven’t already done so please collect your box from the Narthex.
Parish Life and Activities
You will see on the notice board in the back of church and in the narthex a poster display which shows the full extent and diversity of the range of ministries that takes place within the parish. When you have time I would like you to have a look at the display so that you can appreciate what is taking part in the parish and see if there is anything you also could contribute. In the light of the parish not having a full time priest it is important that the whole parish are aware of the extent of what goes on and how we can all contribute to the parish. My thanks to Alison Johnston on her work on this.
Pax Christi
This Catholic Organisation that works for peace throughout the world is promoting a petition to call on the British Government to make public its information on use of Drones bombing campaigns in Afghanistan. This information is made public in the USA. As the petition states there are a number of ethical issues concerned on the use of drones in military campaigns. Please see petition in the narthex
