The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
This week we have begun the week of prayer for Christian Unity. We are invited to reflect on how much we share in common and to be open to insights from all the members of the Christian family. At the 10.00 am Mass we welcome the Rev Derry Towmey, the Vicar of St Cuthbert’s, Bedlington who will be preaching at our Mass. Please continue to pray for Christian unity, especially at our local level. I will be preaching at Stakeford Methodists on the evening of 25th January.
Peace Sunday
This weekend is Peace Sunday. The theme for this year is Slaves no more, but brothers and sisters. Pope Francis invites us all to be instruments of peace but this can only come about if we are attentive to the poorest and weakest in our communities and within our world.
St Bede’s School
Two classes will be joining us for Mass on Wednesday. Mr Groark has asked for the pupils to have much more participation when children come to Mass in the church so we will have a special theme for each of the school Masses with children taking part in the readings and bidding prayers.
Parish Confirmations
Letters should have been received by all Catholic pupils in Years 9 and 10 living within the parish boundary. If you know of anyone who would like to be confirmed in that age group please let me know as soon as possible. The first session will be on 5th February.
Parish email address
We are having problems getting to the parish email account. At least for the time being if you wish to contact me by email please use: bedebedlington@live.co.uk
Journey of Faith will continue on Wednesday at 6.30 pm. We will explore; The Church 1: What is it?
Christ in the World
The next meeting will be on Friday 23rd January. We will watch the French film ‘Untouchable’ which explores on the experience of those who are and those who care for, people with disabilities. This will be followed by a discussion on the issues explored in the film
Move out into the Deep
This is a weekend at the Youth Village, taking place next weekend 24/25th January and is the next step of YMT working with St Benet’s and the local parishes. The aim of the weekend is to explore how we can carry on from all the good work that was done at the mission. I appreciate that this is short notice but f there is any adult who would like to take part in this please contact me as soon as possible.
White Flower Appeal
We have been asked by the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child (SPUC) to have the annual white flower appeal in January. This will take place next weekend (24/25 January). One of their main campaigns at the moment is supporting the Glasgow midwives Mary Doogan and Connie Wood who are securing a legal right not to take part in abortions. Please take a postcard from the Narthex for more information.
World Youth Day
There will be a meeting after Mass on 1st February for anyone interested in taking part in World Youth Day in Krakow, August 2016.
Moving Forward In Hope
As mentioned last week Tony Hart and his daughter Katie will be contacts for the moving forward in hope process. On 8th January I had a very fruitful conversation with Fr Jim O’Keefe who is the priest in the diocese who is facilitating the process. It is clear from him that this process is about creating flourishing communities that are truly Christ centred, encouraging us to be Christian disciples and to live the Gospel in our world today.
On the weekend of 14/15th February Fr Jim O’Keefe will be coming to both Masses to share with you the purpose and aims of this process. I think it is of the utmost importance that as many as the parishioners as possible hear what Fr O’Keefe has to say. I sense he has the clearest perception in the diocese of what we are seeking to achieve in this process. So if you wish to know how this process applies to you and our parish please do what you can to be at St Bede’s that weekend.
