Sea Sunday
Today is Sea Sunday, when the Church remembers all those who live and work at sea.  Many people have never stopped to consider how important seafarers are to our standard of living.  Without them we would not have most of the items we use in our everyday lives.  Many of these seafarers do not have the quality of life on board that every human has the right to.    Apostleship of the Sea (AoS) is the official maritime agency of the Catholic Church in Great Britain.  Sea Sunday is the principal fundraising and awareness raising event of the year for AoS.  Today’s collection is being taken at all Masses throughout the country.

Mass Times
The parish council has proposed from the first Sunday of Advent the Sunday morning Mass will be at 10.00 am.  Ballot papers are available today, and the weekends of 15th and 22nd July  in the Narthex  -  you are given a choice of either 10.00 or 11.00 am for you to express your preference.  On completion please place in the wooden box in Narthex.

Peter’s Pence Collection

The special collection for Peter’s Pence which was deferred will be taken next weekend.  Please use the named white  envelope from your planned giving box.

Final Holy Communion Liturgy

Today we have the final liturgy of the First Holy Communion programme.  The theme for Mass  is ‘Sending Out’.

Parish Mission

Thanks to Alison Johnston who has created a display on a notice board in the narthex about the mission. On the board there are lists for the various session that will need to be prepared for people to volunteer  My friend Michael Legrue who has been to the parish and led a music workshop in May last year, he will assist with the music for the mission.  He will also be coming for the weekend of 15/16 September so I would like to use that weekend as an opportunity for those who want to be involved in the mission to come together to pray, reflect, and work together for the liturgies for that week.  So if you would like to be involved please keep that weekend free.

.Fr Ian Jackson

I know many of you got to know Fr Ian while he was parish priest at St Aidan’s, Ashington.  This week Fr Ian celebrated his silver jubilee as a priest, our prayers and congratulations to him.  Fr Ian has been given a new parish at St Joseph’s in Blackhall.  We wish him all the best for the future

Diocesan Altar Servers Mass

The annual Mass for altar servers in the diocese will be at St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday 6th October at 11.00 am.  The Mass will be presided by the Bishop.  Could altar servers and their parents please inform me if they would like to take part.  Any of the children who have recently made their First Holy Communion would like to be altar servers please contact me.

Diocesan Festival, 29 June - 1 July, Youth Village
Unfortunately the first Diocesan festival arranged for last weekend had to be cancelled at short notice because of the flooding.

New Safeguarding Officer
Muriel Middlemiss and Christine Priest have given up the role of being the parish safeguarding officers. I would like to express my sincere thanks to them for the hard work and effort they have given to this important role. Pat Hodgson has kindly accepted my invitation to her to take up this role. My thanks to her for her willingness to take on this responsibility for the parish

Special Ministers
Irene Harwood, Chaplain to Wansbeck Hospital is looking for special ministers in the area to be part of a rota that would take Holy Communion to patients in the hospital.  Irene is conscious that some of the patients would like to receive communion on a more regular basis than once a week.  If you would like to help please contact Fr Chris.

Fr Chris away at Conference
I belong to a group called The British and Irish Association of Practical Theologians.  We are having our annual conference this week in Chester. The theme of the conference is Crying out for Redemption which seeks to explore what the Christian’s response should be at this time of uncertainty and anxiety.  Practical theology is a discipline that focuses on the actions and practices of the Church and how this relates to our faith tradition and the challenges of the present age.
