20th Anniversary of the Church

On October 21st we will have a special Mass  and social to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Church. I am pleased to say that  the architect who designed the Church, Vincent Stienlet, has agreed to  join us on the day and will speak to us about  his thinking behind the design of the Church. I am also delighted that  the sculptor Fenwick Lawson will also be present for the celebrations. It was Fenwick who created the Christ figure on the sanctuary, the ‘Star of David’ panel at the front, the stain glass window in honour of St Bede at the back and the sculpture of ‘Our Lady of Bedlington’. Fenwick will also speak to us and  explain this thinking behind these four pieces of his work in our church

Day of Recollection  -  A date for your diaries
In the light of a very successful day spent at the Franciscan Priory at Alnmouth the prayer and spirituality group agreed that we should repeat this, so on 27th October we shall have a day of recollection at the priory, leaving Bedlington at 9.15 am.  Please see poster in Narthex if you would like to sign up.

St Bede’s Primary School
Last week I received a letter from Mr Tony Mays who is director of early learning for schools for the whole of Northumberland.  He kindly acknowledged my efforts for the School over the past two years.  I mention this since my work in the schools is representing the whole of the parish.  Also, it has been the parish, especially through the parish council who have encouraged me to spend as much time as possible in school work. So, I am pleased the concern of the parish for our primary school has been recognised at a high level in Northumberland County Council.

Refugee and Asylum Seekers
There will be a collection today for tins of food and meat (not pork).  Please leave your donations in the Narthex.  Further donations on the first Sunday of the month.

Mass Times
As mention last week you will see from the results posted on the notice board there was a clear majority of you who wanted Mass at 10.00 am on a Sunday morning. The ratio of the vote was two to one.  We need to make a decision now in order to inform the editor’s of the Northern  Catholic Calendar which is published for Advent. So, the change of Mass time will NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL SUNDAY 2nd DECEMBER

Thank you
Kathleen Devine and family wish to thank people of the parish and very many friends for the kindness, support and prayers shown to them at the recent loss of Fred, and the dozens of cards, Mass cards, flowers and letters during this sad time.  Thank you all for taking Fred to your hearts.

St Bede’s F.C

The club had its initial game on Saturday, a friendly against a Church team from Blyth. The team lost 3-2 but I am told that the  team was promoted last season so the result was respectable and the players are not too down hearted!  The final friendly before the season starts is on Saturday 11 August at 10.30am at the Westlea pitch and will be against St. Charles’ , Gosforth. The fixture list for all the games before Christmas is in the narthex

Day for Life
A total of £115 was raised for the Day for Life last weekend “use your body for the glory of God”.  Proceeds raised this year will be used to support Anscombe Bio-ethics Centre (formerly known as Linacre Centre for Healthcare Ethics).  As stated last weekend proceeds from last year’s Day for Life collection has gone to the Bishop’s Mental Health Project.  Reports from the project, examples of good practice and further resources can be found on www.mentalhealthproject.co.uk

Called to the Supper of the Lamb
Day of Reflection for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Costello Centre, Alnwick, Saturday 22nd September 10.30 am to 4.00 pm, led by Kathryn Turner.  Please bring a packed lunch, tea/coffee provided.  Cost £5..  Tea/coffee provided cost £5.

The Year of Faith
Pope Benedict has called for a ‘Year of Faith ‘ starting on October11th. The aim of the year is to deepen and strengthen people’s understanding of their faith. You will be hearing more about this on a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Seamus in September. There is a significant diocesan programme of which more details will be  given later. This will include prayer services in every school and a number of talks in October and November exploring the major documents of the Second Vatican Council. Please look out for more  details later.
