Preparation Day for Mission - 15thSeptember
The music team that will help our own musicians during the mission week of 2nd December to 9th December will be coming at the weekend of 15/16th September. The preparation day will be for all those who have kindly offered to take part in the mission liturgies. We will probably start the day with a liturgy that will reflect some of the themes of the mission and hopefully give people an indication of how the liturgies during the mission could look like, and then split up into different groups to work on their respective liturgies and the musicians will be on hand to advise in terms of music and any other features of the liturgies. Please contact me if you have any queries about this. The day will start with tea/coffee at 9.30 am, and the preparation day commence at 10.00 am and finish at 4.00 pm. The musicians will also be joining us for the weekend Masses.
20th Anniversary of the Church
On October 21st we will have a special Mass and social to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Church. I am pleased to say that the architect who designed the Church, Vincent Stienlet, has agreed to join us on the day and will speak to us about his thinking behind the design of the Church. I am also delighted that the sculptor Fenwick Lawson will also be present for the celebrations. It was Fenwick who created the Christ figure on the sanctuary, the ‘Star of David’ panel at the front, the stain glass window in honour of St Bede at the back and the sculpture of ‘Our Lady of Bedlington’. Fenwick will also speak to us and explain this thinking behind these four pieces of his work in our church.
Visit to Bulgarian Orphanage
You will see at the back of church on the notice board photographs and some comments about the recent visit made by three of our younger parishioners, Beth Lacy and Rebecca and Laura Johnston, to the orphanage in Bulgaria. They asked me to draw your particular attention to the photograph of the building work that is taking place. This was funded by proceeds raised from the sponsored walk the parish took part in earlier this year. Beth, Rebecca and Laura and willing to answer any questions you may have.
Treasure Hunt
Sunday 16th September at 2.00 pm leaving St Bede’s car park. We intend to finish at a mystery pub for tea. Cost is £5 per adult, children free, (which is towards of tea). Please pay to social committee. If you are interested please add your names to the lists in Narthex. Numbers required by 26th August. Please see poster in Narthex for further details.
St Bede’s F.C
The team have their first league game at the Westlea pitch on Wednesday 15th August at 6.30 pm. I am not sure if prayers of Our Lady of the Assumption will have any particular efficacy on her feast day but their league debut could not have started on a more ‘Catholic’ of days.
Day of Recollection - A date for your diaries.
In the light of a very successful day spent at the Franciscan Priory at Alnmouth the prayer and spirituality group agreed that we should repeat this, so on 27th October we shall have a day of recollection at the priory, leaving Bedlington at 9.15 am. Please see poster in Narthex if you would like to sign up.
Mass Times
As will see from the results posted on the notice board there was a clear majority of you who wanted Mass at 10.00 am on a Sunday morning. The ratio of the vote was two to one. We need to make a decision now in order to inform the editor’s of the Northern Catholic Calendar which is published for Advent. So, the change of Mass time will NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL SUNDAY 2nd DECEMBER
The Olympics
The writer of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics games was Frank Cottrell Boyce, Frank is practising Catholic. In an article for the Jesuit on-line magazine ‘Thinking Faith’ he says how when all the flames of the petals were rising the main designer for the ceremony , Mark Tildesley, said ‘There you go Frankie, Pentecost. Frank goes on to say ‘So may be Mark was right to remember St Peter standing up in that market place unskilled in public speaking, not knowing any language but his own, he was ready to put his vulnerability in front of the nations, ready to start without knowing the ending. Maybe there was some kind of Pentecost here’ Food for thought ! Full article in the narthex

The Year of Faith
Pope Benedict has called for a ‘Year of Faith ‘ starting on October11th. The aim of the year is to deepen and strengthen people’s understanding of their faith. You will be hearing more about this on a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Seamus in September. There is a significant diocesan programme of which more details will be given later. This will include prayer services in every school and a number of talks in October and November exploring the major documents of the Second Vatican Council. Please look out for more details later
