Preparation Day for Mission - 15thSeptember

The music team that will help our own musicians during the mission week of 2nd December to 9th December will be coming at the weekend of 15/16th September.  The preparation day will be for all those who have kindly offered to take part in the mission liturgies. We will probably start the day with a liturgy that will reflect some of the themes of the mission and hopefully give people an indication of how the liturgies during the mission could look like, and then split up into different groups to work on their respective liturgies and the musicians will be on hand to advise in terms of music and any other features of the liturgies.  Please contact me if you have any queries about this. The day will start with tea/coffee at 9.30 am, and the preparation day commence at 10.00 am and finish at 4.00 pm.  The musicians will also be joining us for the weekend Masses.

Refugees and Asylum Seekers

There will be a collection next weekend for tins of food and meat (not pork).  Please leave your donations in the Narthex.  Further donations on the first Sunday of the month.

The Matthew Project

As well as seeking continued contributions of food, the Matthew Project also need volunteers. There are two tasks that help is needed. One is to  do two hours stints at supermarkets to help with in-store collections, asking people to buy certain foods while they do their shopping. The project is also starting a clothing bank and needs help to sort out and bag baby clothing and school uniforms. Please sign list in the narthex

Christ in the World

The next meeting of the group will be Friday, 7th September at 7pm.  Tracey Atkinson has kindly volunteered to lead the discussion; 'Islam and its impact on today's society'.  All are welcome.

Treasure Hunt

Final numbers for the Treasure Hunt on 16th September required today.  Please see poster in Narthex for further details.

St Bede’s F.C

Congratulations to the club on gaining their first point in the North East Christian League. They drew on Wednesday Evening to St Aidan’s Chapel, Castington, 1-1. Thanks to those parishioners who have expressed their support and encouragement to the new club. This is much appreciated by the manager and players

The Year of Faith

Pope Benedict has called for a ‘Year of Faith ‘ starting on 11th October. The aim of the year is to deepen and strengthen people’s understanding of their faith. You will be hearing more about this on a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Seamus in September. There is a significant diocesan programme of which more details will be  given later. This will include prayer services in every school and a number of talks in October and November exploring the major documents of the Second Vatican Council. Please look out for more  details later

The Universe and Catholic Times

There are complementary copies of the Universe and the Catholic Times today.  You are encouraged to take a copy.  Further copies costing £1.30 available weekly.

Paralympic Games
I am sure over the next two weeks we will witness many occasions of courage, determination, and inspiration as  paralympians from across the world show us what we are able to achieve.  The Paralympics is very important since the emphasis is on what someone with disability is able to achieve .  I am sure these games can be a source of inspiration for us all.  One of the key  insights I have gained from my work with L’Arche, and the writings of Jean Vanier, is that in some form we are all disabled inasmuch as  our unique combination of strengths and weaknesses enable us to do some things but not others.  Being made aware of what some people with obvious disabilities can achieve  will hopefully enable us all to focus on what we can do and achieve.  Of course, acknowledging as people of faith, it is the power of God moving through us that can achieve so much.
