Apostleship of the Sea
Today is Sea Sunday, when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea.  Without them we would not have most of the items we buy in the shops.  Today’s retiring collection is for the Apostleship of the Sea (AOS), the Church’s official maritime welfare agency.  It supports seafarers both practically and spiritually.  This annual collection is absolutely vital to enable it to continue its work, so please give generously and remembers seafarers in your prayers.

There are envelopes in the Narthex for those who wish to gift aid their donation.

Youth Mission to St Benet’s
The next takes place today (13th) at 1.00 pm at St Paul First school in Alnwick.  It will start with a picnic, hopefully outdoors, to be followed by designing and making banners based on the words of the Mission Prayer. If people need lifts to this event please let me know. All are welcome.

The mission prayer continues to be said at the end of weekend Masses.  If I remember!

Marriage
Michael Smethurst and Rachel Carr will be married next Saturday at 12.30 pm.  Our prayers and best wishes are with them as they prepare for their wedding day and lifelong commitment to marriage.

Last week of the Academic Year
On Friday the schools break up for a well deserved holiday.  During the last week of term the following will be taking place in St Bede’s Church:  Thursday at 1.30 pm and 2.30 pm.  We will have pupils from St Benet’s, Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.  If anyone would like to volunteer to be a special minister please let me know, and on Friday at 11.00 am all of St Bede’s School will be joining us for end of year Mass.

Exposition next Friday will be at 10.15 to 10.45 am.

Parish Barbecue
I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to the parish social committee and anyone else who contributed in any way to the parish barbecue.  The evening was a great success, the sun kept shining, and we had about 90 people in the garden with an age range from 2 to 91 years!  There was a great sense of community, it was lovely to see.

Future Vision of the Diocese
On 16th July at 11.00 am and 7.00 pm at the Cardinal Hume School, Gateshead, the Bishop will be outlining his vision for the diocese on what changes will be needed with fewer priests available.  Unfortunately I am away next week, but if anyone would like to represent the parish at either of these meetings please let me know.

Assisted Dying Bill - Please write to a member of the House of Lords    The Bill to legalise "assisted dying"  - meaning assisted suicide - will be debated in the House of Lords on 18th July 2014. There will be a free vote because it is not government legislation. If passed, this Bill would place vulnerable people at serious risk. Especially if you have direct experience of caring for a dying person, either as a family member or as a health or social care professional, please write before 18th July to a Peer to tell them your views.  For more information, including details of how to write to a Peer, please visit www.catholicchurch.org.uk/assisted-dying-bill  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO WRITE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND CERTAINLY BEFORE 18TH JULY.  I have written to a member of the House of Lords a copy of that letter will be on the notice board for you to see what are the key arguments.
