Prayers for the Church As I write this we do not know when the conclave of Cardinals to elect the new pope will begin. All that we do know is that it will be starting in a short period of time. We continue to pray for the cardinals as they begin their informal discussions on finding a successor to Pope Benedict . We also continue to pray for the church in Scotland in the light of the resignation of Cardinal O’Brien and his frank admissions to his personal failures. The events that have happened in the church internationally and nationally, have been a source of shock and uncertainty. I can appreciate how this can be distressing for some of you. At this time of Lent we focus on God’s love and mercy for us, this is the reality that cannot change, so while in our prayers we pray for the church we must also seek to be always attentive to God’s unchanging love and grace
Lent During Lent the following activities will be taking place in the parish:
· Stations of the Cross on Wednesday, 10.00 am,
· On Wednesday, Mass at 7.00 pm,
· Exposition and Reconciliation (throughout the deanery) each Wednesday, 6.00 to 7.00 pm,
· Lenten lunches Thursday, 12 to 1.00 pm at St Cuthbert’s,
· Service of Reconciliation, Sunday, 17th March at 4.00 pm,
Journey of Faith continues on Thursday at 6.00 pm.
Refreshments after Sunday Mass My thanks to all who have volunteered to take part in a rota to help serve teas/coffees after the 10.00 am Mass on Sundays. The rota takes effect from this weekend, so tea/coffee will be available after Mass this Sunday. I would encourage people to come into the hall since it is an opportunity to meet and get to know other parishioners.
Lenten Churches Together Lenten Lunches As stated above a simple Lenten lunch is available at St Cuthbert’s from 12 to 12.45 pm followed by a short prayer service. Individual churches are taking the responsibility to provide soup for each Thursday during Lent. It is the responsibility of St Bede’s to provide soup on Thursday 14th March. My thanks to those who have offered to produce soup for that day.
Parish Council Meeting Minutes are available from the Narthex. If you can please look at these since it was an important meeting. As I mentioned last week the council felt there was a growing sense of community within the parish though there was some uncertainty as to what the future may bring when the parish is amalgamated in some form with another parish or parishes and it is happy to share clergy. I think it is important for the parish to know that it is gifted in so many ways and has responded in a very positive way to previous challenges. I have no doubt that through the help of the Spirit the parish can respond to this time of change and transition in a similar positive way.
Christ in the World Group The next meeting will be on Friday, 15th March at 7.00pm. Moira Quinn and Fr Chris will lead a discussion on bereavement and loss. All are welcome.
First Holy Communion The next liturgy for the First Holy Communion programme will be next Sunday the 17th March at 10.00 am The theme is ‘Offering Ourselves’.
Penitential Service Next Sunday, 17th March, we will have our Lenten Penitential service at 4.00 pm. The prayer and worship group suggested that we try to use some of the creative and imaginative ways of celebrating the liturgy, which we used during the mission, for the penitential service so the liturgy before the opportunity for individual confession will be a bit different to that of previous years and will include some drama that the confirmation candidates are going to do for us. I hope the event will be a genuine celebration of God’s forgiveness for us as a community and as individuals through the sacrament of reconciliation.
