Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI

We pray for the Church at this present time while there is a vacancy for the papacy.  We pray for Pope Benedict XVI Emirutus now that he has retired from the papacy and takes up his new calling of praying for the life of the church.  As you may know the conclave has been brought forward and will be starting soon.  We keep the cardinals responsible for choosing the successor to Benedict XVI in our prayers.  I am also aware that it has not been an easy week for the church in this country, especially in Scotland.  Could we please pray for the life of the church in Scotland.

During Lent the following activities will be taking place in the parish:

· Stations of the Cross on Wednesday, 10.00 am

Refreshments after Sunday Mass

My thanks to all who have volunteered to take part in a rota to help serve teas/coffees after the 10.00 am Mass on Sundays. The rota takes effect from this weekend, so tea/coffee will be available after Mass this Sunday.  I would encourage people to come into the hall since it is an opportunity to meet and get to know other parishioners.

Lenten Churches Together Lenten Lunches.

As stated above a simple Lenten lunch is available at St Cuthbert’s from 12 to 12.45 pm followed by a short prayer service.  Individual churches are taking the responsibility to provide soup for each Thursday during Lent.  It is the responsibility of St Bede’s to provide soup on Thursday 14th March.  Could I have volunteers to provide soup for this day.

Parish Council Meeting

The main aim of the parish council meeting was to take stock of where we are as a parish and to look to the future.  In the light of what I said recently on the restructuring of parishes within  the county, looking ahead to the future has now become particularly important.  I sensed from the discussions  that there is a growing sense of community within the parish where people feel encouraged to use their gifts and talents for the parish.  I also had an impression of uncertainty and fear as to what the future may bring for the parish.

I came away from the meeting with a sense that the parish needs to be affirmed for what it has achieved in recent years and I hope that this will give the parish a sense of confidence to face whatever the future may bring. Therefore, I would like to reaffirm the sense of community, generosity, and the rich diversity of gifts in this community.  I would also like to encourage people to use their gifts and talents for the parish. In regards to this I will be producing a poster that outlines the different roles and tasks that are needed for the parish and would encourage people to look at this list to see if they can offer something to the parish.

Minutes from the meeting will be available soon.

Christ  in the World Group
