Apostleship of the Sea
Today is Sea Sunday, when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Many of us have never stopped to consider how important seafarers are to our standard of living. Without them we would not have most of the items we use in our everyday lives. Many of these seafarers are unable to practice their faith due to long periods away from home, whilst others are denied basic rights and working conditions that we take for granted.
Today’s retiring collection is our opportunity to support the work of the Apostleship of the Sea (AoS), the official maritime welfare agency of the Catholic Church in Great Britain. There are some envelopes in the Narthex if you wish to gift aid your donation.
Baptism
Today we welcome Sophie Ella Key into God’s family in baptism. We are asked to pray for Sophie, her parents, and all preparing for baptism.
First Holy Communion Programme 2013/14
Discussions have already started about the First Holy Communion programme for 2013/14. There will be an introductory meeting for those parents who would like to enquire about their children receiving First Holy Communion on Monday (15th) at 5.00 pm in St Bede’s School. Any parents of Catholic children in Year two or higher years of any school are welcome to attend this meeting.
Catechists in the Parish
As mentioned last week there is a need in the parish for catechists to help with both the Baptismal preparation and First Holy Communion programme Today, (14th July) after Mass, there will be an meeting of anyone who would like to help with either of these programmes. It is important that more parishioners are involved with these important areas of parish life. If you like to find out about more please come to the meeting or contact myself or Alison Johnston.
Parish Youth Forum
The first meeting of the parish youth forum took place last Sunday. First of all I would like to express my thanks to all those who came and took part. There were eight parishioners present. It was decided that the group would like to try and do some drama with some of the Gospel readings that we will be having during the autumn. The first one will be on Sunday 15th September where the Gospel reading includes the parable of the Prodigal Son. The young people agreed that they would try and be creative with this Gospel story. There was also a discussion about having some sort of decoration in the hall and the young people would be inviting the wider parish in this project. There will be more details later about this. Finally, some of the St Benet Biscop’s pupils will be meeting one of the chaplain’s to discuss about how the Catholic ethos of the school is portrayed, and manifested within the life of the school.
End of Academic Year - Mass Celebrations
· On Friday St Bede’s School will be joining us for Massat 10.00 am to celebrate the end of the academic year and to pass on best wishes to Year 6 pupils who will be leaving that day. I would like to wish all staff and pupils of St Bede’s and St Benet Biscop’s schools a very enjoyable and relaxing break. My thanks to all staff for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the life and work of their respective schools.
· Fr Laurence Jones will celebrate two end of term school Masses for St Benet Biscop pupils on Thursday at 1.30 and 2.15 pm. All are welcome to attend.
Children’s Liturgy
With the school holidays starting on Friday today will be the last of the children’s liturgy until September. I would like to pass on my thanks to all parishioners who are involved in this important aspect of parish life. It has been great to see new children’s liturgists being involved with this. I am very grateful to you all for your work in this important area of parish life
Liturgy Rotas
If you are involved in the liturgy please take a copy of the new rota which is available in the Narthex today. Please arrange a substitute if you are unable to fulfil your 'turn' and amend Master Copy in Narthex.
Parish Ceilidh
Unfortunately this has had to be postponed because of poor ticket sales. Apologies to those who had already bought tickets. Refunds available from the social committee.
Prisoners of Conscience
The very active Justice & Peace group in St Charles, Gosforth are adopting a prisoner of conscience each month and are forwarding to me the details of the particular prisoner of conscience with a sample letter for people to write. This month the prisoner of conscience is from Bahrain, photocopies with details about the prisoner and sample letter will be left in the Narthex.
