Warm Welcome to Visitors
On behalf of the parish I would like to extend a warm welcome to any visitors who have joined us for our Masses this weekend. We hope you feel at home with us while you are away on holiday. If you are here for the 10.00 am Mass please know that tea/coffee is available in the hall afterwards and you would be very welcome to join us and please feel free to introduce yourself to Fr Chris who is the parish priest.
Baptism
Today we welcome Dominic James Rochester into God’s family in baptism. We are asked to pray for Dominic, his parents, and all preparing for baptism.
Journey of Faith
The journey of faith programme will be starting again in the autumn. If you know of anyone who would like to become a Catholic could you please let them know about this programme and ask them to contact me One family have already indicated that the whole family would like to join the Church next Easter; it has been lovely see the commitment they have already made to the life of the parish
Open House is taking a well-earned break and will be re-opening on 3rd September.
Pope’s visit to Brazil
Many people including those from outside the church were inspired and moved by the Pope’s visit to Brazil. I was particularly touched by his visit to the favelas in Rio. His love and concern for the poorest and weakest in society was particularly evident. His humility, humanity and openness is clearly touching the hearts of many people, even sceptical journalists!
Food Banks
· Refugee/Asylum Seekers There will be a collection this weekend for tins of food (not pork) for refugee and asylum seekers. Please leave in Narthex. The project has informed that they are running low on some commodities so if you can be generous and give any contribution to the refugee project this would be particularly appreciated. Next collection first Sunday of the month.
· Matthew Project Now that many of the government reforms to welfare have come into operation it is predicted that the demands on food banks such as the Matthew Project will be even greater. Therefore, any contributions of basic food stuffs would be most appreciated. Thanks to all those who contribute and help the Matthew Project
St Bede’s FC
Training has already started for next season. This will be the second season for the club. The club may not be at the same standard as Bayern Munich or Barcelona but it has provided the opportunity for a group of young men ( some not that young!) with a focus on a Saturday morning and an opportunity to make new friends within the context of Christian faith that is made possible by the existence of the North East Christian League. I very much wish to commend Dominic Molloy and all those who have help to get the club established.. If you or anyone you know you think may be interested in playing for the team please contact Dominic Molloy on 07725039180 The first home game is 21st August at Gallagher Park. Kick off at 6.30 pm.
Diocesan Altar Servers Mass
The annual Altar Servers Mass for the diocese will be at the Cathedral on Saturday 5th October at 11.00 am. This Mass will be presided by the Bishop. If any of the altar servers would like to take part please contact me as soon as possible.
Catenian Association
This organisation for practising Catholic men have been in touch with me to ask if I could encourage anyone who would be interested to join this organisation. If you are please contact Neil McCole 01670 518502. With the recently sad death of Ralph Simpson no one in the parish at present is a member of this organisation. I should declare my own interest in that my own father was a member and I know first hand that they are very supportive to widows in the group.
Caring for Dementia Sufferers and their Carers
As I have gone around the parish I have been struck by how during informal conversations with parishioners that they or their loved ones, are in the early stages of some form of dementia. I appreciate how this raises a number of issues and concerns not only for the dementia sufferer but for their loved ones. I am wondering whether there would be any value if there was a support group established for dementia sufferers and their carers. Please let me know if you would be interested in supporting or being a member of such a group.
