The Week of Prayers for Christian Unity
The annual week of prayer for Christian Unity started on 17th January and will finish on the 25th. This weekend I would like to give a warm welcome to Christopher Million, one of the pastors of Bedlington Christian Fellowship, who will preach at the 10.00 am Mass this Sunday. The Colliery Methodist Church in Bedlington Station have drawn the short straw and will have me preaching at their 6.00pm service.
Baptism
Today we welcome Olivia Rose Johanson into God’s family in baptism. We are asked to pray for Olivia, her family and all preparing for baptism.
Journey of Faith
The journey of faith programme continues. We will be exploring Sacraments over the next few weeks. Please pray for our four enquirers.
Visit of Youth Ministry Team to Deanery
In December of this year the diocesan Youth Mission Team will be leading a mission week in St Benet Biscop’s School. The preparations have already begun for this. The YMT wish to establish a coordinating team with members from all the parishes in the deanery. The first meeting of this team will be on Thursday 23rd January at 7.00 pm here at St Bede’s.
I would like to thank young members of our parish Lydia Barrass, Katie Hart, Patrick Shields and Olivia Grundy Priest who along with Joe Gallagher and Virginia Lorenz, will represent the parish in coordinating with the YMT.
Baptismal Catechesis in the Parish
As mentioned in previous weeks the way we prepare and celebrate the sacrament of baptism in the parish is going to be radically different. Please see information sheet about this in the Narthex.
White Flower Appeal
The annual White flower appeal for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Child will be taken next weekend.
Appointment of Archbishop Nicholls as Cardinal
Our prayers and best wishes to Cardinal Elect Vincent Nicholls who was appointed Cardinal by Pope Francis last Sunday. This is not just an honour for himself but to the whole Church in England and Wales.
World Youth Day 2016
It has been agreed by the parish council that we seek to explore the possibility of taking a group of young people in the parish to the next Papal World Youth Day in August 2016. We have plenty of time to prepare for this but if we are to fund raised and encourage our young people to take part then we need to start preparing as soon as possible. There will be an initial meeting for anyone who would like to be involved be that taking part in the trip or raising funds to subsidise our young people to take part. This will be on Sunday 2nd February after the 10.00am Mass
Poverty Action Week
Annual Poverty Action week will run from 25th January to 2nd February. As you may remember the Poverty Action event for the north east of England was held here at St Bede’s here in Bedlington. This year the event will be on Saturday 1st February at St Thomas’ at the Haymarket in Newcastle at 2.00 pm. The theme of this years Poverty Action Week is “Standing with people in crisis”. The event will focus on refugees, young people, people experiencing food poverty, families under pressure and those struggling with debt. The Matthew Project will be taking part in the service.
Lenten Day of Recollection
For the first time we are going to have a day of recollection during Lent. This will take place on Saturday 15th March. We will be going to the Friary at Alnmouth. I will be sharing about my retreat that I am going to in February which will include looking at the Passion and Resurrection accounts in St John’s gospel. If you would like to take part please sign the sheet in the Narthex.
Diocesan Justice & Peace Coordinating Council
This group is responsible for promoting and facilitating on issues on peace and justice throughout the diocese. I have been asked to take on the role of vice chair of this group with the hope that I will agree to becoming chair of the group at a later date. I am conscious that this will involve extra work but with the emphasis Pope Francis is placing on the need to be attentive to the poor I believe there is a great opportunity to make peace and justice issues more fully integrated into the life and mission of the diocese. Please keep me in your prayers for this important role.
