Welcome
Today we welcome Fr Tony Rattigan who will celebrate our weekend Masses here at St Bede’s.
White Flower Appeal
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) will be holding its annual White flower appeal today. In common with the Catholic Church, SPUC defends and upholds the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death. The Society’s work covers a wide spectrum of pro-life, pro-family issues. It seeks to protect unborn children from abortion and defends the disabled, elderly and incapacitated from euthanasia and assisted suicide. Please give generously.
Journey of Faith
The journey of faith programme continues on Tuesday evening. Please continue to pray for our four enquirers.
Baptismal Catechesis in the Parish
As mentioned in previous weeks the way we prepare and celebrate the sacrament of baptism in the parish is going to be radically different. Please see information sheet about this in the Narthex.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
My thanks to Christian Million for preaching at the Mass last Sunday. It was also good to have the opportunity to preach at Colliery Methodist Church. I would like to thank them for their welcome. Although the week of Christian Unity has come to an end this does not mean that we stop praying and working with other Christians with the ultimate hope that we will be fully united with each other and in Christ.
Refugees and Asylum Seekers
There will be a collection next weekend for tins of food (not pork) for refugee and asylum seekers. Please leave in Narthex. Next collection first Sunday of the month.
St Bede’s School
Years 3 and 4 will be joining us for Mass on Tuesday 28th January at 10.00 am.
World Youth Day 2016
It has been agreed by the parish council that we seek to explore the possibility of taking a group of young people in the parish to the next Papal World Youth Day in August 2016. We have plenty of time to prepare for this but if we are to fund raised and encourage our young people to take part then we need to start preparing as soon as possible. There will be an initial meeting for anyone who would like to be involved be that taking part in the trip or raising funds to subsidise our young people to take part. This will take place next Sunday after 10.00 am Mass.
Poverty Action Week
Annual Poverty Action ends next Sunday. As you may remember the Poverty Action event last year for the north east of England was held here at St Bede’s here in Bedlington. This year the event will be on Saturday 1st February at St Thomas’ at the Haymarket in Newcastle at 2.00 pm. The theme of this years Poverty Action Week is “Standing alongside people in crisis”. The event will focus on refugees, young people, people experiencing food poverty, families under pressure and those struggling with debt. The Matthew Project will be taking part in the service.
Lenten Day of Recollection
For the first time we are going to have a day of recollection during Lent. This will take place on Saturday 15th March. We will be going to the Friary at Alnmouth. I will be sharing about my retreat that I am going to in February which will include looking at the Passion and Resurrection accounts in St John’s gospel. If you would like to take part please sign the sheet in the Narthex.
Diocesan Justice & Peace Coordinating Council
This group is responsible for promoting and facilitating on issues on peace and justice throughout the diocese. I have been asked to take on the role of vice chair of this group with the hope that I will agree to becoming chair of the group at a later date. I am conscious that this will involve extra work but will the emphasis Pope Francis is placing on the need to be attentive to the poor I believe there is a great opportunity to make peace and justice issues more fully integrated into the life and mission of the diocese. Please keep me in your prayers for this important role.
