The Feast of the Epiphany
Today we move into the second part of Christmas. The first part focuses on the mystery of God becoming flesh Incarnation. The second part  of Christmas is from today till next week-end where the theme is ‘Epiphany’ or revelation. God seeks to manifest his presence and love to all peoples. As we start a new year may God’s grace, peace and love be revealed in your life, in our community and throughout the world

Baptismal Catechesis in the Parish
As part of the preparations the parish needs to  do for a time when there is not  a full time priest here in the parish , this year will see the introduction of a Baptismal Catechetical Programme lead by lay people. My thanks to Christine Priest and Alison Johnson who are willing to do this work for the  parish and thanks also to John O’Neill who has been assisting them in the training for this role.
The baptismal programme will run four times a year, with parents  being required to come to two evening sessions before their child’s baptism and one afterwards.
The dates of the baptismal programme over the next 12  months are on the notice board and on a separate sheet for people to take away. With there being four programmes over the year and seeking to encourage a community aspect to  baptisms you will see that Baptisms will take place over eight days during the year covering four week-ends. This will mean that  long term planning for baptisms will be important
If parents wish  to take part in earlier sessions and then have your child baptised and take part in the final session at a later point you are welcome to do so. Parents are also welcome, if they so wish, to be involved in the first two sessions of programme  before their child is born
If any member of your family or friends are intending to have a child baptised this year please pass on this information to them as soon as possible.  Please contact me if you any queries about this

First Holy Communion Liturgy
Next week-end at the 10.00am Mass will see the next Liturgy for the First Holy Communion Programme. The theme will be ‘Listening to God’s Word’. Please continue to pray for our Children who will be making their First Holy Communion later this year

Christmas Decorations
The Christmas season does not finish till  January 12 so we will have the decorations taken down after the 10.00am Mass on January 12

Journey of Faith
The journey of faith programme will resume on Wednesday 8th January at 7.30. This session will give a background to the Church’s understanding of sacraments. Please pray for our four enquirers who hope to join the church at Easter– Jamie  & Harrison Belizzi (siblings) Jon  & Sarah Warwick (spouses)

Holocaust Memorial Evening   to be held at St Aidan’s Catholic Academy, Sunderland on Thursday 23rd January at 7.00 pm   Principal Speaker Eugene Black (Holocaust Survivor, prisoner number 55456).  Further details on poster in Narthex.

Word Youth Day 2016
It has been agreed by the parish council that we seek to explore the possibility of taking a group of young people in the parish to the next Papal World Youth  Day in August 2016. We have plenty of time to prepare for this but if we are to fund raised and encourage our young people to take part then we need to start preparing as soon as possible. There will be an initial meeting for anyone who would like to be involved  be that taking part in the trip or raising funds to subsidise our young people to take part. This will be on February 2nd after the 10.00am Mass, c.11.00am

White Flower Appeal
The annual White flower appeal for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Child will be on the weekend of January 25/6

The Week of Prayers for Christian Unity
The annual week of prayer for Christian Unity will be 17th to the 25th of January. As in past years there will be a  ‘Pulpit Swap’ taking place between the various Churches. This year we will welcome a member of Bedlington Christian Fellowship who will preach at the 10.00am Mass on Sunday 19th  January. The Colliery Methodist Church in Bedlington Station have drawn the short straw and will have me preaching at their 6.00pm service  on the 19th of January

Study Day for Children Liturgists
There will be a training day for Children Liturgists on  Saturday February 8th at St Joseph’s in Gateshead. The day will be focusing on ‘Godly Play’. I am delighted that two members of the parish have already volunteered to take part. If other of the children liturgists or anyone who would like to take up this role would like to take part please let me know. The deadline for applying is January  27th. The parish will pay for the cost of the day
