Welcome Back Sunday  Today is Pentecost and is designated by the diocese as ‘Welcome back’ Sunday.  I would like to wish you all a very happy Pentecost.  May we experience the joy and power of the Holy Spirit. During my homily I would like to reflect on this piece of scripture.  What the Spirit brings is:  love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness, and self control.” Galatians 5: 22

St Bede’s Day –Mass and Parish BBQ  St Bede’s Day is Saturday 25th May. The Vigil Mass will be for our Parish solemnity. This will be followed by a BBQ in the garden and Presbytery. Tickets are £5 and are available from members of the social committee. I think it is very important that as a parish we celebrate our patron since we are not simply celebrating Bede but celebrating our parish community, so I hope as many people as possible can come to the Mass on the 25th and/or the barbecue afterwards.

Baptism Today we welcome Joshua Thomas Lewis into God’s family in baptism.  We are asked to pray for Joshua, his parents, and all preparing for baptism.

Ministers of Eucharist  First of all, just a reminder that the renewal of promised will be at the Masses for Corpus Christi week-end, June 1st and 2nd. Also I would like a meeting of special ministers who already or would be willing to take communion to the sick and housebound or lead Services of Communion when a priest will be absent, I will have this meeting on what would have been Corpus Christi Thursday, 30th May in the hall at 7.00 pm.

Carmelites  There will be a meeting today of  the Carmelites.  All are welcome.

Restructuring of Deanery  Date for your diary  It would be important to have an open meeting of the parish to  explore what the restructuring of the deanery will mean for St Bede’s. This will take place on Sunday 9th June after 10.00 am Mass. I would also like to discuss how lay people will need to be more involved when there is not a full time priest in the parish

Meeting with Ian Lavery  The Churches Together had a fruitful discussion with our MP last Friday. There was a shared concern in the increase of child poverty which statistics indicate is now at 40% of children in South East Northumberland.  We also discussed the consequences of the welfare reforms.  Mr Lavery appreciates these conversations and if you have any issues you would like to be raised by Churches together please let me know.

Lay Training Fund  There is a second collection today for the Lay Training fund.  Please use your white envelopes.

There will be a Blood Transfusion Session in the hall on Wednesday.

Days of Recollection
· On Saturday 1st June from 10.am to 2.30pm Mrs Lesley Twomey who has an interest in mediaeval Marian devotion will co-lead a day of reflection with me on Mary focusing on the Annunciation and Assumption. Please bring a packed lunch

· On 12th June at 7.00 pm  at St Aidan’s Ashington,  there will be an evening of reflection for the deanery  called ‘Rehallowing the Land, reflecting on the legacy of the Northern Saints

· Finally for your diaries the annual parish day of recollection will be at Alnmouth, Saturday, 12th October. 9.30-5pm. I will lead some reflections on John’s Gospel in the light of the course I will be taking part in France this September on this gospel  lead by the founder of L’Arche, Jean Vanier- I am very excited!

Chernobyl Children Life Line  This charity offers holidays for children by the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station accident.  Ten children will be staying in Northumberland for the month of June, with two of them spending a fortnight with some of our parishioners, Joe and Amanda Gallagher.  The children’s living standards are very poor.  They come with few clothes so any decent second hand clothes for both boys and girls for 9 to12 year olds would be much appreciated.  They will be distributed to the children for them to take back home.  They can be left in the Narthex or at the Moor Farm shop.

Near Restful Waters  -  Day for Carers   During Carers’ Week, there will be three days around the diocese for Carers to come together for a time of rest and reflection.

Thursday 13th June, Minsteracres, £30 to include three course meal
Saturday 15th June, Holy Name Jesmond (£15 to include lunch)
